From Illness to Independence: Peggy & Kurt’s Path to Peace
6:21

When you’ve shared a life with someone for years, the challenges you face aren’t yours alone, they’re ours.  For Peggy and Kurt Lee of La Veta, Colorado, that truth became clearer than ever as they navigated aging, illness, and the need to create a safer space in their home together.

This is their story of courage, partnership, and the life-changing difference a safe shower can make.

Meet Peggy & Kurt: A Love Story Rooted in Resilience

Peggy and Kurt married in 2012—December, to be exact—and they’ve been laughing, supporting, and loving each other ever since. A few years ago, they traded the complications of rural living for a simpler life in town. No more well maintenance. No more septic worries. Just a home where they could enjoy retirement and care for each other with ease.

But life had a different plan.

In 2020, Kurt discovered a growth on his leg. Doctors removed it, and the diagnosis was one no family ever wants to hear: cancer. Thanks to immunotherapy, he recovered well—but the surgery left behind an unexpected side effect: lymphedema.

The swelling in his leg grew so severe that even everyday movements became difficult. “My knee is blown up… bigger than my head,” he recalls. At its worst, he couldn’t get into the shower without Peggy’s help.

For a man who had spent a lifetime taking care of others, this loss of independence hit hard. And for Peggy, watching him struggle was heartbreaking.

They knew something had to change—and they would face it the way they faced everything else: together.

The Challenge: When a Bathroom Becomes a Barrier

Their home, built in 1980, still had its original bathroom. That meant high thresholds, slippery surfaces, and a shower that simply wasn’t designed for someone with mobility challenges.

Every shower required teamwork—Peggy supporting Kurt, Kurt trying to balance, both hoping today wouldn’t be the day a slip turned into something worse.

Aging couples across Colorado feel this strain daily. What starts as a physical limitation quickly becomes an emotional one:

  • The loss of privacy

  • The fear of falling

  • The constant worry: What if something happens when I’m not right there?

Peggy and Kurt knew the bathroom had become a safety risk. And more importantly, it was affecting the way they lived as a couple.

It was time to reclaim their home—and Kurt’s independence.

Searching for Help—Together

For nearly a year, Peggy searched for a contractor who could remodel their bathroom safely and correctly. But phone call after phone call led to the same discouraging answer:

“We can put you on the list. Might be seven years.”

Seven years wasn’t an option—not for Kurt’s safety, not for Peggy’s peace of mind.

Then she reached out to HomePride Bath.

“HomePride actually got back to me,” Peggy says. “That’s when I knew—okay, now it’s time to get this done.”

Their responsiveness was the first sign they had found a partner who took their needs seriously.

A Consultant Who Listened First, Sold Second

When HomePride’s design consultant Stacey arrived, Peggy and Kurt weren’t sure what to expect. They’d talked to enough contractors to brace for pressure or empty promises.

Instead, they met someone who felt like an old friend.

“Quite the character,” they both laughed. But more importantly, he listened.

He didn’t talk over them. He didn’t upsell. He simply walked their bathroom, understood their mobility challenges, and showed them exactly how quickly HomePride could make it safe again.

Kurt remembers thinking, Finally—someone who gets it.

The Installation: Where Relief Finally Began

Once they decided to move forward, HomePride’s installation team got to work.

Kyle, their installer, impressed them immediately. Professional. Respectful. Focused.

“He did an absolute excellent job,” Peggy says. “Everything was done expediently.”

Within two days, their outdated 1980s bathroom became something entirely different:

A shower Kurt could step into safely.
A space Peggy no longer had to worry about.
A bathroom that honored the life they were building together.

Kurt put it simply:

“Within two days, we had a shower I could get into.”

And when they saw the final result?

“It’s just a beautiful shower—and we’re so happy.”

Why Their Story Matters for Other Colorado Couples

Peggy and Kurt aren’t alone. Thousands of couples reach a point where the home they love no longer supports the way they need to live.

Their experience highlights a truth many homeowners quietly feel:

Bathroom safety isn’t just about mobility—it's about dignity, confidence, independence, and the emotional well-being of everyone involved.

Their story teaches us:

  • Make decisions as a team. Mobility challenges affect both partners—emotionally and physically.

  • Don’t wait for a crisis. Early action prevents accidents and restores independence.

  • Choose a contractor who listens. Empathy is just as important as craftsmanship.

  • A safe shower changes everything. Not just for the person with limited mobility, but for the person who loves and cares for them.

Peggy and Kurt didn’t just remodel a bathroom—they rebuilt peace of mind.
