If you’re planning on repainting or remodeling some parts of your home, you’re going to need to learn the various paint finishes that you can use. Each finish is different from another, and is best suited for specific uses. Having a basic knowledge of the different paint finishes is crucial to making the right remodeling choices.

Here’s a quick guide to choosing the right kind of paint finish for your home’s interiors, courtesy of leading bathtub replacement contractors in Colorado.

For Rooms With a Lot of Activity Like Kitchens and Bathrooms

  • High-Gloss Finish

High-gloss finish is very easy to clean and is very durable. It’s hard enough to withstand a lot of activity, shiny enough to let dirt be removed easily, and is capable of reflecting large amounts of light which makes it perfect for kitchens and bathrooms. Also best used on doors and window trims.

  • Semi-Gloss

This finish might not have the same shine as high-gloss, but is still very reflective and capable of withstanding the abuse brought about by moisture and multiple cleanings. Similar to high-gloss paints, this is best used in kitchens, doors and window trims. Experienced bathroom remodeling contractors recommend these finishes.

For Rooms That Aren’t Demanding but Have High Traffic Like a Family Room or Dining Room

  • Satin Finish

Satin is a slightly glossy finish that doesn’t offer as much sheen as semi-gloss paint. It’s relatively easy to clean and isn’t as hard on the eyes as shiny high-gloss paint. One downside to this finish, though, is that it reveals application flaws such as brush strokes.

  • Eggshell Finish

This finish is so named because it looks similar to a chicken’s egg – a no-shine finish with a bit of luster. It is capable of covering up some imperfections and is quite easy to clean, but is not designed for use in kitchens and bathrooms.

For Rooms With Low-Traffic, Like Adults’ Bedrooms

  • Matte or flat finish

This has no shine and absorbs light instead of reflecting it back. It offers the most pigment among all finishes, but is very hard to clean. In fact, the only way to clean it is by repainting. And since it isn’t glossy, it’s quite relaxing to look at. Best used in adults’ bedrooms.
