Ever since the American with Disabilities Act (ADA) was passed in the 1990s, most bathrooms in businesses nowadays must modify their facilities to accommodate the needs of those with disabilities. While it was made for businesses, making an ADA-compliant bathroom isn’t limited to them. In fact, you can also make a residential bathroom ADA-compliant. But how exactly can you do this?

In this article, LuxStone® of Colorado, one of the country’s best walk-in bath installation companies, lists the four features of an ADA-compliant bathroom.

  1. Accessible Toilets – Since the toilets are one of the most important parts of a bathroom, it’s vital that they’re ADA-compliant as well. To make your toilet ADA-compliant, the toilet should be at least 60 inches wide and have a seat of 17 and 19 inches from the unit’s base to the seat top. Apart from that, the toilet must also have 16 to 18 inches of room between the unit’s centerline and sidewall.

  2. Shower Seats – Whether you have a walk-in bath or a one-piece shower stall, if you want to meet ADA requirements, experts recommend that you install a shower seat. According to walk-in bath companies, it should be foldable and placed near the wall adjacent to the controls of the shower. It should also be able to support a force of 250 pounds.

  3. Grab Bars – Grab bars are the most important feature of ADA-compliant bathrooms as it provides stability to those who are facing mobility issues. When you install them in your bathroom, they should always be 1 ¼ to 1 ½ inches in diameter and the grab bars should be 34 to 38 inches above the floor.

  4. Properly Sized Sink – When trying to make an ADA-compliant sink, make sure it’s both properly sized and is at 34 inches high. That way, there’ll be enough knee clearance to accommodate a wheelchair.
