Whether the local water supply is having problems, or if you’re simply looking into saving a little money on your monthly water costs, you can save water when you bathe. In this blog, walk-in bath conversion contractor LuxStone® of Colorado shares water-saving bathing tips.

Take a Shower Instead of a Bath

Running a bath takes about 35 gallons of water. A five-minute shower, on the other hand, consumes about 12 using an “average” shower head. You can save more water by cutting your shower time, as every minute saves saves you about two and a half gallons of water. Some even recommend taking a “Navy shower,” where you only use the shower to wet yourself. Then you turn it off, soap up, then turn it back on to rinse. If your bathroom is up for a remodel, consider having your bath converted to a shower, or perhaps even a walk-in bath if you’re planning on aging in place.

Get a Low-Flow Shower Head

Walk-in bath companies like us recommend upgrading to a low-flow shower head if you’re still using a “standard” one. Low-flow shower heads are required to have a flow rate of significantly lower than 2.5 gallons per minute. In fact, certain models can release as low as 0.5 gallons per minute without affecting the showering experience by incorporating air or separating water into individual streams. Choose WaterSense-labeled replacement shower heads to ensure compliance with low-flow shower head regulations.

Take a Sponge Bath

Sponge baths are not just for the sick and the elderly. You can save an incredible amount of water with a basinful of warm water, a sponge and your favorite shower gel. It may sound unpleasant or may take a lot of work, but if you’re trying to cut down on your water usage, taking sponge baths is definitely an option to consider.
